Flying machines are mechanisms that use slime block s and/or dearest block s, redstone blocks , observer s, and piston due south to move a structure of blocks in one or more directions, moving freely through air or water without support. They can also exist designed to comport along a actor and/or other entities, which may exist riding in a minecart or towed along by honey blocks.
The mechanics of such machines vary slightly between the Java and Boulder Editions of Minecraft; This guide covers Java Edition and Bedrock Edition in separate sections.

The fundamental blocks for flying machines, more or less in social club of appearance:
- Pistons are capable of pushing or (sticky pistons) pulling upwardly to 12 blocks. These can only be arranged in a line in front of the piston, simply slime and love blocks allow conveying forth blocks placed to all sides of that line.
- Various immovable blocks (notably obsidian and tile entities such as furnaces[ JE only ]) provide limits and frameworks.
- Redstone Blocks: The fundamental point here is while virtually other redstone power sources are partial blocks that get broken by pistons, this one can exist pushed or pulled past pistons, and so a car can bear its own power source.
- Observers are sensors for both the environment and adjacent parts of the aforementioned motorcar, which tin can also turn a change in one office of the machines into power elsewhere.
- Slime and Honey blocks are similar -- both can "stick to" other blocks at their sides, carrying those forth with them when pushed or pulled by a piston. Their differences are as follows:
- They do not stick to each other.
- Slime blocks are solid blocks, which can take and transmit a redstone indicate, while honey blocks are transparent blocks which cannot.
- Slime blocks bounce entities away from them, while honey blocks elevate entities along with them (and prevent players or mobs atop them from jumping).
There are 2 main components of slime block flying machines:
The engine provides the basic control and motion, based on the idea that a slime cake pushed by a piston will motion adjacent movable blocks, including other slime blocks, when pushed or pulled. However, each piston is limited to moving 12 blocks total.
Extensions uses additional pistons to allow tow along boosted segments of a larger automobile. Love blocks tin can too be used to bypass the piston push button limit by using adjacent slime block and love block flying machines to dissever the number of blocks in a structure among pistons. In Bedrock Edition, extensions are divided into leading and trailing types.
Note that the schematics in this section use the usual building scheme where layer 1 (or occasionally layer 0) is the bottom layer.
Engines
Engines are mechanical parts of slime-block based flying machines used to move them.
In all cases, a major issue is control, particularly how to start and finish the machine. In that location are several options here:
- A semi-automatic engine needs player's intervention to move it, generally past updating a piston -- e.grand., using flint and steel on it, or rapidly placing tripwire confronting it.
- A fully automatic engine can be started by a unmarried update, say past breaking a cake (perhaps a push button or a sign). A switch tin can be used, but is probable to exist left behind once the auto starts to move. Stopping them can be more hard -- many engines will finish only when they run into an obstacle. If the obstacle is wrongly shaped, it may pause the machine, thus a prepared docking station may be needed.
- A few "drivable" machines have advantage of the point that a note block produces an update when played, so a player riding the machine tin trigger note blocks to start and/or stop the machine.
- Engines can also differ in bachelor directions and speed. The simplest can only move in a single direction, but two-way and even diagonal motion are possible. Again, dedicated docking stations are sometimes needed.
Schematic Gallery: Engines (Java Edition)
A two-way engine tin exist made with every bit few every bit six blocks – two Observers, two Slime Blocks, and 2 Sticky Pistons. Two-way engines A and B (see gallery above) show two different means to do this. In both cases, the direction of flight depends on which observer is updated first. Note that in the diagram shown, each observer directly powers a slime block. The dock shown is placed so that the trapdoor will encompass the face up of the incoming automobile'south near observer, which lets it send the machine back the way it came.
Calculation honey blocks allows a player to be carried with the machine in relative safety. The rideable engine shown adds ii dear blocks, and a role player can stand on each of them. It can be made with 14 blocks – viii slimeblocks, ii honey blocks, 2 sticky pistons and two observers. Getting on and off is another problem....

An engine can also motion diagonally by moving alternately along 2 axes. The Diagonal Engine shown is best built out from level 3 (the upper slime--and-piston layer). It moves along its slime-block diagonal, but is guided by immovable (due east.k., obsidian) barriers on level three, so it can follow a straight or curved "track", in whichever direction(southward) it tin can move until it reaches a corner to block it. It is started by activating either of the observers on top (placing a block, flint-and-steel), and will move abroad from that corner (that is, it is also a 2-way flyer).

This video demonstrates two-mode engine A above, with long slime-block arms for harvesting, which shuttles between two prepared docks. It tin exist triggered past placing a block atop the pistons, or by switches at the stations. Note that the harvested crops will exist launched at some speed, so this design may be amend for an enclosed subcontract.
Extensions
Extensions are mechanical parts of a fully-automatic flying car used to push an independent role of a large flying structure. A single piston only can push button or pull upward to 12 blocks. Extensions use additional pistons to "extend" a slime structure by allowing more blocks to be pushed.
One-fashion extension
A one-mode extensinon has ii parts: a normal piston in the rear, and a slime cake (or more) with a power source in the forepart with space betwixt them.
Once the rear part with the piston is pushed, the piston will be activated by a power source from the forepart part. It will push button the slime block (and thus the adjacent part of the flying contraption and its extensions), which pulls the ability source with it. The piston will then deactivate and set for another button.
Some simple engines are just fabricated of looped extensions, such that, at whatever given time one piston is always powered (in these machines information technology is important to place the redstone blocks last).

Driveable flying machines
A flying machine tin can be designed to non only carry a player forth, merely allow them to command the machine in flying, starting, stopping, or changing directions. Oftentimes due to lag, slime engines can problems allowing the player to fall through the car. This can be solved by placing the player in a vehicle such as a minecart, by standing on top of a dearest cake, or by standing inside a Composter.
Notation: Placing a minecart in any such build will require a temporary rail, perhaps atop a temporary block for convenience.
Starting the engine of a flying machine often involves updating a piston or observer. Braking, on the other paw, isn't equally straightforward to do in survival considering a piston-immovable block must be present to stop the engine. A reliable braking method that was first popularized past SethBling is to adhere a noteblock (or whatever similar redstone component movable past pistons) to the "face up" of an observer that powers a piston. The piston is placed on the front of the engine, and since extended pistons cannot be pushed by other pistons, activating the noteblock at the right time will cease the engine.
Past using sticky pistons instead of pistons for the braking components, they besides get 2-mode extensions. These can be used to carry extra blocks, such as holders for minecarts/minecart chests, passenger roofs, TNT duplicators, etc.

Driveable flight machine B is kurzawa6's modified version of Drivable motorcar A, with minecart chests and a roof attached to the 2 two-way spliters. 1 extension carries a roof to protect the driver from phantoms, the other carries a cargo module with two minecarts (optionally with chests)
- Dimensions: 10x6, 2 high minimum, 5 high with roof.
- Notes:
-
- The slime cake marked a tin get another slime block to a higher place information technology, with top slabs on each side sheltering the rider/cargo minecarts.
- The starred minecart is the "pilot'southward seat".
- Before going either way, first make sure the roof is retracted by clicking the <̅ block, and the cargo is retracted by clicking the >̅ block.
- To become either way , click the appropriate < >. To stop, spam-click the matching barred block <̅ >̅ .

Driveable Machine C is a 2-fashion machine which can be reconfigured in the field to become the other two ways, by mining and replacing four blocks. It can carry two passengers, and has two cargo bays for minecarts with chests (or plain minecarts, for passengers). It uses 20 slime blocks including the cargo trophy. Its utilise is complex, just may exist worthwhile only for bragging rights.
- Dimensions: 8x10, 3 loftier.

Diagram from video, showing ignition points and notation blocks used for each direction. Note: This prototype is "sideways", with e and west shown every bit as upwards and down. - To go east:
- Set fire (or water) backside the west-virtually observer.
- Sit in the eastern minecart.
- Earlier the burn down extinguishes, click the note block nearest yous to release the brake.
- Wait for the burn to burn out (or remove the water) to trigger that observer again and start the engine.
- To stop the engine, spam-click the same note block. Cheque that the carrier for your minecart is retracted, if not, click the note block once more to retract it.
- To go west, do the same in mirror paradigm.
- To switch to n-south movement:
- mine the starred pistons (note the helpful logs below them) and rotate them a quarter-turn clockwise -- still facing outward, but the other outward
- likewise, mine the starred observers, and put them in the positions and directions of the arrows.
- To move north and south, similarly twice trigger the "rear" observer, and utilize the nearer notation block to release the restriction and stop the engine.
- To go east:

Driveable Machine D is a compact 4-mode engine that is controlled by applying a redstone torch to the central observer.
- Materials: xiii Observers, 26 slime blocks, 8 sticky pistons, 8 regular pistons. For apply: redstone torch, immovable cake
- Dimensions: 7x5, four loftier (or alternately 5x5x5)
- Build guide:
- Start with the central ii slime blocks of layers 2 and 3. The lower of these needs to be at to the lowest degree two blocks above "the footing" -- that is, the highest ground yous intend to fly over.
- Identify the upper gluey pistons outward, then employ those to place the lower ones facing inwards.
- Add the downward facing observer on the acme of this, then the 4-high slime pillars outside the pistons, extending in a higher place and below them. Utilize those to place the downward-facing observers on layer 1.
- Extend the slime pillars into T shapes, at the peak on two opposing sides, on the lesser for the other two. (this diagram has the top T's at east and west). Place the regular pistons at the ends of the T-confined, facing into the machine.
- Place the layer-two observers against the slime pillars, then place the layer-four observerd confronting the T-confined.
- Note: the layer-4 observers alternately be placed atop their slime blocks (level 5), each pair facing each (powering the adjacent pistons). This placement fits the entire build in a 5x5x5 cube. However, that higher position slightly obstructs the rider's view, then the original builder prefers the 4-level build.
- Usage: The player stands on the pistons surrounding the top central observer, with a redstone torch in hand. The engine can be started in any direction past placing and chop-chop breaking the torch on that side of the central observer. It is stopped past again placing the torch in the same place (and leaving it until the engine stops). With the machine in motility, placing the torch may be difficult, having a few spares may be wise. Annotation that information technology is entirely possible to fall through the corner holes, so step advisedly, and stay on the piston yous're riding while the motorcar is in motion.

More than complex engines
The following video shows a circuitous example, an infinitely expandable flying car with a 2-style engine and multiple extension (each carrying 2 TNT Duplicators):
A 4-style engine (2 vertical directions) that switches directions upon contact with a few blocks.
Flight machines are much more restricted in Boulder Edition due to the lack of quasi-connectivity and other piston behaviors. In Java Edition, a sticky piston powered with a 1 tick pulse will drop the block information technology is carrying. The absenteeism of these behaviors makes it difficult to create complex flying machines.
Elementary engine one
Simple engine i, observer and redstone block provide the propulsion.
These are basic flight auto designs. The shown examples will motion to the viewer'due south left.
Removing the block of redstone, or placing obsidian in forepart of the observer, volition cause the machine to stop. This may exist hard to do, unless in creative mode.
![Screenshot 20200410-000341 Minecraft.jpg](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/minecraft_gamepedia/images/c/c6/Screenshot_20200410-000341_Minecraft.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/247?cb=20200409220738)
To opposite the direction of this machine, simply move ane of the slime blocks to the back, and switch the piston and viscous piston.
This design is ideal when redstone is scarce, or when up to 9 blocks need to be placed on the front end end (the front half merely consists of 3 blocks, with a total of 12 blocks able to be pushed past the piston).
Elementary engine two with trailer
Trailer
Past placing an observer and a gummy piston onto the side, one can build off of the Simple engine 2 design to brand the machine bigger as a whole. Keep in mind that multiple trailer attachments can be placed on the side, upwardly, and/or downward simultaneously without exceeding the push/pull limit of 12 blocks. This is one way of creating a extension in Bedrock Edition.
This add-on tin be used to agree more cargo, whether it be entities, chests (which are only movable in Bedrock Edition), or TNT (which can be detonated by a following machine equipped with a redstone block).Multi-directional engines
Bedrock multi-directional flying engine
Render station, side view
This pattern is multi-directional but it does crave a return station to change the management. The observers are one cake higher than everything else and have slime blocks below them. The render station is only an example, anything that pushes the machine over then that the other sticky piston is unable to pull the terracotta should work. It may assist to watch the videos below to see some more than examples.

Extensions
In Bedrock Edition, information technology is possible to create extensions, however they are but functional in one management. This offset is the trailing extension (Trailer, shown above), and the leading extension. The leading extension can exist made by attaching a backwards-facing observer directly backside a forward-facing normal piston, both attached to slime blocks.
